Overcoming the Struggle with Food and Weight

"I had been dieting for 8 years when I went to Susan's workshop. Now, one year later, I am completely free from the "have to diet" feeling, and I have been effortlessly losing the weight that I had to fight in the past."
Jill A. Mooradian

People struggle with food intake for a wide variety of reasons. The struggle can lead to an excessive body weight, an underweight condition, or yo-yoing weight. It is a very common, yet complex problem.

If you have just a mild problem with eating and weight (e.g. a simple sugar addiction, or recent, short-term weight problem), then it's likely that just a few coaching sessions will give you the resources to solve it quickly. However, if you are deeply entrenched in a long-term struggle with food and weight, you will need a multi-pronged approach and enough time and assistance to overcome it. I firmly believe that everyone has the potential to break completely free from the struggle with food and weight, but it can be a challenging journey.

I began helping people overcome the struggle with food and weight in 1984 because I had been a yo-yo dieter and a borderline anorexic, and I wanted to help others experience the complete freedom from food/weight conflict that I'd achieved. I wrote Making Peace With Food to share my step-by-step approach with those who couldn't work with me in person. I still use many of the techniques in Making Peace With Food; however, I have refined some of it and added to it considerably.

The biggest challenge I've faced is: how can I help clients achieve the emotional peace they need without meditating regularly? I've described the role of meditation in Full Lives (7th chapter); however, I know from experience that most people are unable or unwilling to meditate regularly, if at all. Therefore, I needed a faster, easier way to help clients reduce their anxieties, self-defeating guilt, and other negative emotions. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) fills that need beautifully.

The needs of clients who struggle with food and weight vary tremendously; therefore, I work with each individual to select a combination of techniques that are both appropriate and appealing for him or her. These can include some or all of the following:

  • EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
  • Ayurvedic mind/body assessment & associated recommendations
  • Craving reduction/elimination techniques
  • Setpoint weight assessment
  • Hunger awareness training
  • Water therapy
  • Enjoyable activity development (i.e. exercise)
  • Spiritual work (non-denominational)
  • Re-learning to think and eat like a NON-dieter
  • Body awareness/acceptance work
