Quit Smoking
Most people find it extremely difficult to quit smoking for good, despite various resolutions and programs. If you are one of the many who have been able to quit temporarily, but not permanently, or if you tend to trade your tobacco addiction for another problem (e.g. overeating), then it's time for a different strategy.
Addictions serve an important purpose: they temporarily relieve or reduce negative emotions such as anxiety, anger and unhappiness. Unfortunately, using an addiction to smother negative emotions doesn't help to resolve the underlying problem. Therefore, if you try to overcome an addiction without a positive, healthy way to relieve the negative emotions that the addiction serves to reduce, then you will probably reach for some kind of substitute—often another form of addiction.
EFT can be extremely effective in reducing or eliminating cravings for tobacco as they arise. In most cases it takes between one and five minutes to reduce or eliminate the craving itself, and this highly effective technique can be learned in just one coaching session. However, this "quick fix" is temporary; the craving will usually return later. Even after any physical addiction is overcome, the need to smother negative emotions—and therefore the craving—will come back if the underlying problems have not been resolved.
Fortunately, EFT can also be used to reduce or eliminate the recurring or chronic negative emotions that fuel addictions. This "personal peace process" requires a significant commitment of time, effort and fortitude—but it can result in benefits far above and beyond the permanent resolution of the addiction.
An extremely motivated, disciplined client can continue the personal peace process on their own after just three or four coaching sessions. However, some clients find that they need ongoing support in the form of one-on-one coaching, or a support group, in order to stay on track and achieve complete freedom from addiction.
